Wednesday, September 24th - The Winthrop Yacht Club was the scene of another sold-out Taste of Winthrop, packed with men and women having a great time socializing and partaking in the evening's event. Approximately 30 eateries from Winthrop, Chelsea, East Boston and Revere participated and showcased a few of their specialties. There was plenty of food to sample such as: pasta, cheeses, fajitas, soups, chowders, seafood, meat and poultry dishes. Desserts ranged from cake, cookies, bread pudding and rich creamy sweets. Something a bit unusual was a showcase of gourmet treats for your dog also. Nobody left hungry, unless of course you are lactose-intolerant. Congratulations to the winners of the raffle drawings. Friday September 12, Gusty winds welcomed the Seaport Advisory Council as they arrived here in Winthrop around noontime. The Seaport Advisory Council funded the town’s marina project so it was only appropriate to invite them to have their meeting here and give them a tour of what Winthrop has done with their money. Before the meeting started, a tour of the pier, floating handicap ramp that will be used for the ferry service, and docks was given by Harbormaster Chuck Famolare. Fred Rupp (Quincy) and others commented on how they like what Winthrop has done and want to model their new projects and ferry docks after us. A simple buffet lunch was available under the tent before the meeting started. The Seaport Advisory Council comprises of 15 men and women, and makes the decisions on waterfront projects. The council members are: Lt. Governor Tim Murray (chairman), Massport, Boston-Mid-Coast Region/BRA, Waterways Users, Mayors of New Bedford, Gloucester, Salem, Executive Secretary Seaport Advisory Council, Fall River Economic Development, Northeast Region, Administration and Finance, Cape and Islands Region, Executive Office of Business Development, Executive Office of Transportation, and Director Coastal Zone Management. Megabucks is put into their budget and they decide where the money goes and for whose projects. The different municipalities’ mayors and/or town managers that have projects like Winthop does attended to pitch their programs. |

Last Friday, August 29, GK Films, EdgeofDarkness filmed one scene for their new movie at the Winthrop Landing. People started showing up to see Mel Gibson and Robert De Niro around 2:00PM only to be semi disappointed. Gibson showed around 5:30PM to film his bit and DeNiro didn't show at all. However, all those who did stay, got to watch all the action and learn first hand what it takes (all the hours of setup and rehearsing) to film a 3-minute scene. Below is the informaiton sent via the publicist about the movie. It is slated for 2009 release. The filming at the Landing was considered a "closed set," so as soon as I get permission to release photos of the scene with Mel Gibson, I will put them up on the site. In the meantime, you can see other photos from that day of the crew and setup at: EdgeofDarkness Photos |

Winthrop Residents - Your Beach Needs YOUR Help! Thursday, August 21, 2008 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Winthrop Beach Shore Drive and Myrtle Avenue If you've ever wondered how to get involved and wasn't sure how, now's the time. After 10 years of testing and retesting, Federal Agencies have decided Winthrop residents don't need their beach renourished. An appeal has been approved to allow the DCR to fix Winthrop Beach and that fate will be decided on August 21 when Federal Agencies come to the beach to see its condition and what it means to the residents. We are asking everyone who's around that day to help greet the officials at the Highlands end of Shore Drive and show support by the town or nothing will happen. The jetties won't get fixed, more flooding problems on Shore Drive, Shirley Street, Lewis Lake. This project needs to get done now, before the next big storm hits and it's too late!
Protect Winthrop Beach, the homes on the beach and the gateway to Revere and other communities. Remember - Highlands end of Shore Drive - Thursday, August 21st - 10:00 AM. Any questions, contact either Cheryl Tobey 617-846-5965 Irv Goldstein 617-846-9015
