Still No Decision On Harbor Management Committee Members PDF Print E-mail

As of today, December 8th, there still hasn't been any decisions made about who will sit on the HarborManagement Committee. (something about the budget - though this is not a paying position)

However, the current harbormanagement committee held a working meeting on December 1st which lasted approximately 2 1/2 hours.

Still only a partial group, the “guys” got together with David Vine and spent the first hour of the meeting discussing the location of the building, parking lot and landscaping. At the November 10th meeting the concensus was to leave the building right where the trailer is, so this meeting they discussed what, if any, ramifications there were if they moved the building 30 feet closer to the pier.

Houghton Marine Services finishing up for Winter

A tell-tale sign winter is fast approaching was over the weekend of  November 22nd.  Joe Houghton, of Houghton Marine, and his crew spent the weekend removing the last of the buoys and moorings in both Winthrop and Boston Harbors.  Docked at Crystal Cove Marina, Dave and Brian (see photos) are on hand to help pressure wash the buoys and moorings for winter storage. “It’s cold this time of year,” says Joe Houghton, “and I’d like to take a break for the winter.”

Based in Marblehead, Houghton Marine has been in business for 29 years. Staff includes three of Houghton’s nephews, his son and daughter.

As a reminder, make sure you get your town stickers for both your boat and buoy after receiving your bill in the Spring. This is usually due within sixty days.  Joe looks forward to re-servicing your buoys again beginning April 1, 2009. Any questions, give the office a call at 781-631-9338.

Harbor Management vs The Public PDF Print E-mail

The harbor management committee met on Monday night (Nov. 10th) to discuss the location and design of the new building to be placed at Winthrop’s landing/pier.  Besides the six members who sit on this committee, there were approximately 25 people in attendance including, but not limited to Winthrop residents, Harbormaster and a few assistant harbormasters, the town consultant, engineer and architect for this project. There were no reporters, per se, from the Winthrop Transcript and no one from WCAT.

So what happened?

The meeting lasted approximately two hours and the outcome was the town people decided it was best to keep the new building right where the trailer is currently.  As for design, many views were heard as with the new proposed parking.

Next step is for the harbor management committee to meet again (in private) to discuss the people's concerns and come up with a final decision. But, before that can happen, Tom Reilly has to appoint a few new members to sit on this committee. Hopefully this will happen on November 18th at the Town Council Meeting. Once these appointments are made, then the new harbor management committee can proceed and get this project going.

So here’s a simple question – did anyone bother to ask the harbor master and his crew for their input since this project started? After doing some checking, the answer is NO!

Update on Winthrop Beach PDF Print E-mail

The following is an update regarding the appeal hearing held on August 21, 2008.  Basically, Winthrop has won this round, but still needs to be vigilant for the next process.

According to Joe Orfant (DCR), "General Van Antwerp found merit in Winthrop's appeal and has remanded the denial back to the Division for reconsideration.  He specifically told me that he want the Division to further investigate two issues with us: the “practicability” of the upland source alternative and potential mitigation for impacts at the NOMES I site.  This last point is important.  If the General believes that we should be discussing mitigation it suggests that he may be thinking that the project is indeed permitable.  We’ll know better when we see the actual twenty-five page decision.

In the meantime, we are preparing to advertise for bids for the upland alternative and this exercise should settle conclusively the “practicability” of this method as an alternative.

Thank you for your support.  I’m certain that your letter and other letters from Winthrop residents helped to sway the General’s decision. But now is not the time to let your interest and support wane.  Please continue the support and please now write letters of support and concern to the North Atlantic Division."
