An Important Message from Stop the Pike: On Sunday we met with Transportation Commissioner Thomas Tinlin and Boston Police Superintendent in Chief Robert Dunford to discuss the public safety issues that could result from our boycott. We respect and share their concerns and we have since suspended our boycott for Tuesday, December 16th. We are asking for everyone, in a show of solidarity, to protest on Tuesday with our change for change campaign. We suggest that everyone leave their transponders at home, and pay the tolls in change (Dimes and nickels please!) in the hope we can change our Governor's mind regarding the toll increases. |

"Boston Toll Party- Avoid the Tolls- Tuesday, December 16th!" A message from Stop the Pike Hike: On December 16, 1773, the government passed the Tea Act which revived American passions about the issue of taxation without representation. Unlike earlier protests, this boycott mobilized large segments of the population. It also helped link the colonies together in a common experience of mass popular protest. Particularly important to the movement were the activities of colonial women, who became the leaders of the effort to the boycott. Our current situation of rising tolls is the new version of taxation without representation. In this lofty tradition, please join us in our state-wide protest to avoid the Massachusetts Turnpike on Tuesday December 16. For if we do not hang together, we shall surely hang separately (Thomas Paine). This protest is intended to show decision makers the problems that the proposed toll increases will have on residents who are forced to seek alternative routes to avoid the expenses of the proposed toll increases.
